Bowazon D2R Build Introduction

The Bowazon is amongst the most popular D2 builds and a highly effective one against mobs and bosses as well. If you enjoy missle builds, doing PvP, or farming high density areas, it’s definitely a build you will enjoy. In endgame gear once you wear a Faith bow your whole party can benefit from it’s fanaticism aura, and by having a Pride runeword on your mercenary you can also provide Concentration aura to further boost physical damage. Bowazons are highly versatile, java-bow hybrid options are available, while you can also utilize skill points on your cold damage attacking skills or your fire damage skills. You will be able to solo the entire game as you deal damage from multiple sources and should not have problems with immune monsters. Survivability will not be one of your strengths so i don’t suggest the build for hardcore unless you are highly skilled, but if you avoid getting in the middle of dense monster packs, you should survive any situation in endgame gear.

Your run speed can be super fast, and in case you have an enigma Teleport can also be used for movement. The build outperforms most others for high monster density magic find, like the Cow level, but it isn’t the best fit for Boss farming. You will be able to deal with Uber Diablo, but clearing Uber Tristram will be very challenging. A solo chaos or baal run should not take you longer than 4 minutes in top-tier gear.

Pros and Cons

Pros

  • Super fast clearing mob clearing and movement speed
  • Can solo the whole game
  • The whole party can benefit from Fanaticism aura if you wear a Faith Bow
  • Can kill any monster, but Uber Tristram bosses are challenging
  • Budget options are available, can be a good ladder starter
  • Solo Baal or Chaos runs are doable in 4 minutes

Cons

  • Doesn’t have good survivability unless in endgame gear, it can be too fragile for hardcore
  • Not amongst the most efficient builds for Boss farming
  • Uses a lot of mana, so need mana/rejuv potions.  % mana stolen per hit on gear is suggested.

Suggestions

Playing solo: Bowazons are great at soloing the game. Use Magic Arrow on physical immune monsters to get rid of them quickly. You can also use Freezing Arrow and it’s synergies in case you prefer freezing targets, or Immolation Arrow if you prefer fire damage. Always have a Valkyrie casted to help your survivability and damage output.

Playing in a party: You will be able to help your party’s physical damage immensely once you are able to afford a Faith Bow due to it’s Fanaticism aura. A pride runeword on your merc can provide Concentration aura to further boost physical damage, and having an act2 nightmare offensive merc will also give your party Might aura. Bowazons are also very helpful at clearing areas with high monster density using the Multiple Shot skill.

Survivability, Hardcore: You will not be able to block attacks while using a bow, so unless you are a skilled player i do not suggest the build for hardcore. In endgame gear you should have no issues with survivability, once you wear a Call to Arms as your secondary weapon you can reach up to 3k life with Battle Orders and have 75% all resistances. Passive skills are very efficient against melee and missile attacks. You can further boost your survivability by wearing a Guardian Angel armor to achieve 90 all resistances, and having elemental damage absorption items and % physical damage reduction items such as Verdungo and Crown of Ages can further boost your survival chances a lot. Make sure to have your belt stacked with Full rejuvenation potions and walk instead of running on Hardcore.

Damage output: The area damage output with Multiple Arrows is tremendous, you will be able to deal with big mobs in no time. Single target damage is not as great, but you will be able to kill most Bosses fairly quickly.

Where to farm: Anywhere! You will be able to deal both physical and magic damage, so monster immunities will not be an issue.

Magic Find: The build has decent magic find potential, but you will need to fill your inventory with 7% magic find small charms and a Gheed’s Fortune. Reaching 400-500% magic find while maintaining a fairly fast kill speed is doable.

Budget: Effective budget options are available, but if you want to be efficient in Solo games it will require investing in the most expensive runewords.

Mana/Life: Multiple shot will use a lot of mana, so having % mana stolen per hit is strongly suggested. An Insight runeword on your merc can also help your mana issues. %life stolen per hit is also necessary if you don’t want to rely on potions.

Movement/Mobility: The character’s movement speed depends entirely on gearing. In high-end gear, your runspeed will be very fast compared to other builds, especially if you have some 3% Faster run and walk small charms in your inventory, or 7%FRW skillers.

Ubers: Uber Diablo can easily be killed by Guided Arrow, but Uber Tristram will pose difficulties.

Skill panel: You can spam any skills by holding down the shift button and clicking simultaneously. For the left skill panel, i suggest using Multiple Shot (F1), Guided Arrow (F2) and Magic Arrow (F3). For the right skill panel, Valkyrie(F4), Battle command(F5) and Battle Orders(F6) can be used. F7 and F8 can be spared for town portal and Teleport in case you wear an Enigma armor.

Mercenary: Use Nightmare act2 offensive mercenary to gain Might aura.

Leveling

Skills: Use Magic Arrow and Multiple Shot as you start leveling. You can put several skill points on Multiple Shot as this will be your primary attacking skill for dealing with mobs. Later on, use Guided Arrow and put multiple points on it to effectively deal with single targets.

At your Passive Skill tree, put a skill point on each passive skill as they become available.

As you level, max out Multiple shot and Guided arrow in order to progress with maximum efficiency

Stats: Have enough strength and dexterity to be able to wear useful gear. Put all the remaining stat points on Vitality.

Breakpoints

Check out the Amazon breakpoints at the Breakpoints guide.

Reaching FHR breakpoints will help with your survivability, so aiming for 32%, 52% or 86% should be your goal.

Skills and Stats

Bow and Crossbow Skills

  • Magic arrow (1 point)
  • Multiple Shot (20 point)
  • Guided Arrow (20 point)
  • Strafe (1 point)

Passive Skills

  • Inner Sight (1 point)
  • Slow Missiles (1 point)
  • Decoy (1 point)
  • Valkyrie (1 point)
  • Critical Strike (20 point)
  • Dodge (1 point)
  • Avoid (1 point)
  • Penetrate (1 point)
  • Evade (1 point)
  • Pierce (1 point)

Javelin and Spear Skills

Stat points: The rule of thumb is to put enough points Strength and Dexterity to be able to wear your gear, and all the rest should go to vitality.  For bowazons, you might want to consider putting excess stat points on Dexterity instead if you want to max out your damage. Make sure your survivability doesn’t hinder your farming performance.

Build Modifications

Strafe: If you prefer using strafe for single target attacks, you can max it out instead of Guided Arrow, or you can max out both skills.

Freezing Arrow: If you like cold bowazons better, you can max out Freezing Arrow and its synergies (Ice Arrow, Cold Arrow), instead of maxing out Guided Arrow or Critical Strike. I still suggest maxing out Multiple Shot to quickly deal with bigger mobs. In case you go with a cold build, you might want to consider using an Ice runeword bow as your main weapon for it’s increased cold damage.

Immolation Arrow: If you prefer fire bowazons, you can max out Immolation Arrow and its synergies (Fire Arrow, Exploding Arrow), instead of maxing out Guided Arrow or Critical Strike. Use Multiple Shot to quickly deal with bigger mobs.

Plague Javelin Hybrid: If you want to have a Bow-Java hybrid, Plague Javelin can complement your build well. Max out Plague javelin and it’s synergy, Poison Javelin. Use an Ethereal Titan’s Revenge and a Stormshield, or a 4 socket shield with 4 poison Rainbow Facets to maximize your poison damage.

Impale Hybrid: Impale can deal immense physical damage and can be a very effective skill against single targets. In this build, use a breath of the dying ethereal War Pike or Ghost Spear as your secondary weapon. In case you prefer an Impale hybrid, you can still max out your primary bow skills.
