The Ultimate Vengeance Paladin Guide for Diablo 2 Resurrected

IntroductionThe Vengeance Paladin, also known as Avenger or Convictionist is a very strong melee build that can one-hit most enemies and demolish any Boss with a few hits. It has very high single target damage output, good survivability, and is very easy to play with (basicly just click on enemy monsters). It deals damage from all elemental sources, so no immunity will cause you any trouble, you will be able to solo anything and your party will benefit from your high level Conviction Aura.

The build can be geared in several ways. In case you play hardcore making it super tanky is easily doable! The downside of the build is that your area damage won’t be good, clearing high density areas will take you a while. Even in an 8 player game your single target damage will be really high. It is a good ladder starter, even in budget gear you will be able to farm efficiently. In good enough gear you will even be able to farm Uber Tristram.

Pros and Cons

Pros

  • Very high single target damage
  • A very useful character in parties, provides high level conviction aura, but defensive and other offensive auras can be utilized too.
  • Has great survivability, one of the best melee builds for Hardcore
  • Relatively budget-friendly, and a good ladder starter.
  • Can solo the entire game without facing difficulties.
  • Very simple to play with
  • Solo Baal or Chaos runs are doable within 5 minutes in top-tier gear.

Cons

  • Not the most efficient build for Magic Find due to the lack of high movement speed and lack of area damage
  • Dealing with bigger mobs takes much longer compared to AOE builds.

Suggestions

Playing solo: Solo play is straightforward with an Avenger, you will be able to smash just about any monster that comes in your way. If you enjoy solo games, this build is the right choice for you. It can even kill Uber Diablo and clear Uber Tristram.

Playing in a party: In parties, members can take advantage of your auras. Normally you will be using Conviction as your primary aura, so any member that deal elemental damage will benefit a lot from your presence. Other offensive auras, like Fanaticism can be utilised when you play with melee or physical damage dealing characters. In defensive situations, Salvation aura can help your party’s resistances. In case you can afford an Exile shield, your party will also benefit from it’s defiance aura.

Survivability, Hardcore: Depending on your gear and skill setup, you can become almost immortal on the expense of some dealt damage. I can strongly suggest the build for hardcore! Aim for at least 75 all resists and a 75% block rate when Holy Shield is used. Use a Raven Frost ring if you want to avoid being frozen. Make sure to walk instead of running to avoid block chance penalties, and have 50% physical damage reduction. You can try using Last Wish as your primary weapon in order to gain a constant Redemption aura and Fade, and with the Life Tap from Exile and Dracul’s gloves your life bar will be full almost all the time. Call to arms and a Spirit shield, like with most builds is the go-to switch weapon.

Damage output: Single target damage output is awesome, you will be able to one hit most monsters. In addition, you will also deal damage from deadly strikes and have a fairly high open wound chance. Alongside the good survivability this will allow you to kill Ubers or any other act Bosses fairly quickly. Unfortunately you won’t deal area damage, and attack speed is far slower than Smite or Zeal, so killing monsters will be slightly slower in a Convictionist setup.

Where to farm: The build can clear any area and can solo the whole game. You will be able to consistently kill monsters at any area.

Magic Find: Vengeance is not an efficient Magic Find skill due to the lack of area damage, and your movement speed won’t be super high either unless you utilize an enigma setup with decent FCR %.

Budget: The build can work effectively on a budget, but for optimal performance expensive runewords are required. It’s a good ladder starter.

Mana/Life: Life Tap from Exile or Dracul’s will solve your life regeneration issues immediately. You can use an act2 Merc with an Insight on him in order to gain meditation aura and regain mana quickly. You can also switch to redemtion aura in order to regain mana. Otherwise you will need to use some % mana stolen on your gear, or rely on potions.

Movement/Mobility: You can use Vigor Aura for faster running. In case you want to use the build to farm specific Bosses, or in any scenario when fast movement is required, you can use an Enigma and some FCR gear (For example Hoto+Spirit as secondary weapons) to teleport quickly.

Ubers: They won’t be a problem.

Mercenary: Use Nightmare Act2 Offensive Merc to gain it’s Might aura. Act1 Merc with a Faith bow can be an option as well.

Leveling

Skills: Start out by using Smite then Zeal as your main attacking skills. From level 18 start using Vengeance as your main attacking skill and start putting points on it. Use Might, Concentration and then Fanaticism as you progress. Make sure to put a point on Holy Shield, and always have it casted on yourself. Put a point on every skill on your Defensive Aura tree except for Meditation. Use Vigor when fast runspeed is needed. Once you maxed out Vengeance, start putting points on Conviction and it’s prerequisites. Conviction reaches it’s maximum potential at level 25, so you don’t need to max it out in order to reap all its benefits in endgame gear. Switch to Conviction aura when the clearing efficiency justifies it.

Once Your Vengeance is maxed and Conviction has optimal number of skill points on it, start putting points on Vengeance’s synergies (Resist Fire, Resist Cold, Resist Lightning).

Stats: Have enough strength and dexterity to be able to wear useful gear. Put all the remaining stat points on Vitality.

Breakpoints

Check out the Paladin breakpoints at the Breakpoints guide.

Reaching FHR breakpoints will help with your survivability, so aiming for 27%, 48% or 86% should be the goal.
